QR Code Shape Generator: Put Your QR Code in a Custom Shape
Use the IMQRScan QR code shape generator to place a working QR code inside a shape, such as a pizza, house, tooth, star, or circle. Pick from 50+ preset shapes, set your colors, add a logo, and download a custom shape QR code that still scans.
A plain QR code is a black square. A shaped code tells people what it is about before they scan. A pizza shape says "menu." A tooth says "book a dental visit." A paw print says "pet shop."
- 50+ shapes: food, retail, home, travel, health, and basic outlines
- Three shape layers: outline, dot style, and corner eyes
- Same link inside: the shape changes the look, not the content

Quick Answer
A QR code shape generator keeps the real QR code square and builds a shaped outline around it. The code scans the same way. The shape just makes it look like part of your brand.
TL;DR: The outline is decoration. The square code in the middle does the work.
- Pick: a shape that matches your business
- Keep: dark colors on a light background
- Test: at the size you will print
What Is a Custom Shape QR Code?
A custom shape QR code is a normal QR code placed inside a shaped design, like a pizza, a house, or a star. The shape is made of extra decorative dots. The real code sits in the middle and holds your link.
Here is the part many tools do not tell you. A QR code itself is always square. The ISO/IEC 18004 standard, which defines QR codes, sets the square grid and the three corner eyes. A phone camera looks for those eyes to find and read the code.
So a QR code shape generator does not bend the code into a new form. It keeps the square code whole and draws a shaped outline around it with dots that look like the rest of the pattern. To the eye, you see a pizza. To the camera, there is still a square code to read.
That is also why a shaped code needs a bit more room on the page. The full shape is bigger than the square code inside it.
Can You Change the Shape of a QR Code?
Yes. People mean three different things when they ask this. IMQRScan lets you change all three in the Design step.
| Shape layer | What it changes | Where to find it | Options |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outer shape | The outline of the whole design | Select shape | 50+ preset shapes |
| Module (dot) shape | The tiny squares inside the code | Select module | 15 styles |
| Finder shape | The outer frame of the three corner eyes | Select finder | 9 styles |
| Finder dot shape | The center of each corner eye | Select finder dot | 8 styles |
QR Code Shapes You Can Use
These are some of the shapes inside the IMQRScan QR code shape generator today. Each one wraps a real, scannable code.
Basic shapes
Food and drink
Shopping and retail
Home and property
Travel and transport
Health, fitness, and services
Round and Star QR Codes
The two most requested simple shapes are the circle and the star. A round QR code fits badges, stickers, bottle caps, and coasters. A star works for awards, loyalty cards, and review requests.
In both cases, the square code sits in the center and the outline fills the rest. You do not lose any scan data by picking a round shape.
Shapes for Food Businesses
Food has the widest range in the library. A pizza shop can use a pizza. A burger stand can use a burger. A bakery can use a bread loaf. A café can use a drink cup. Each one points to a menu or order page, with no need to explain what the code is for.
How to Make a QR Code Into a Shape
The generator has three steps: Data, Design, and Download. The shape lives in Design.
Choose the QR code type
Open the generator and pick what the code should open, such as a website, menu, contact card, review page, or file. Enter the content on the Data step.
Go to the Design step
Click Next to move to Design. The live preview on the right updates with every change you make. Double-click it to see a larger view.
Select a shape
Open Select shape and pick an outline, such as a pizza, house, tooth, star, or circle. The first option keeps the standard square.
Pick module and finder styles
Choose a module style for the small dots, then a finder style and finder dot style for the three corner eyes.
Set the colors
Choose a solid color, gradient, or image fill. Set the eye colors and background color. Keep the pattern dark and the background light.
Add a logo or sticker
Pick a preset logo or upload your own. Add a sticker frame with a short message if you want one.
Test the shaped code
Scan the preview with an iPhone and an Android phone. Test again at the final print size before you order prints.
Download the file
Click Next to reach Download. Use PNG for screens and SVG for print work such as boxes, signs, and flyers.
Quick Answer
To make a QR code into a shape, add your content, open the Design step, pick an outline under Select shape, set your colors, test the preview, and download.
Pick a Shape That Matches Your Business
The best custom QR code shape is the one people understand at a glance. Use this table as a starting point.
| Business | Shape to try | What the code opens | Sticker message |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pizza shop | Pizza | Online menu or order page | Scan to Order |
| Burger or fast food | Burger | Menu or deals page | Scan for Today's Deal |
| Café | Drink cup | Menu or loyalty signup | Scan to View Menu |
| Bakery | Bread loaf | Daily bake list or preorder form | Scan to Preorder |
| Dental clinic | Tooth | Booking page | Scan to Book |
| Pet shop or vet | Paw print | Services or appointment page | Scan to Book a Visit |
| Gym or trainer | Dumbbell | Class schedule or free trial | Scan for a Free Class |
| Real estate agent | House | Listing, photos, or contact card | Scan to See Inside |
| Clothing store | T-shirt or shopping bag | New arrivals or sale page | Scan to Shop |
| Delivery service | Delivery truck | Order tracking page | Scan to Track |
| Law office | Gavel | Consultation form | Scan to Book a Call |
| Cleaning company | Spray bottle | Quote form | Scan for a Quote |
| Toy or kids store | Teddy bear | Product page or gift list | Scan to Shop |
| Travel agency | Hot air balloon | Trip deals page | Scan for Trips |
Example: A Pizza Shop Table Card
A pizza shop wants guests to order from the table. The owner creates a URL code that opens the order page, then picks the pizza shape.
The owner keeps the dots dark red on a cream background, adds the shop logo in the center, and picks a sticker that says "Scan to Order." A quick test on two phones passes, so the owner downloads an SVG for the table cards.
Example: A For Sale Sign
A real estate agent wants a sign code that looks like it belongs on a property. The house shape does that job with no extra words.
The agent picks a dynamic code, so the link can move to the next listing when this home sells. The sign stays the same. Only the page behind it changes.
Will a Custom Shape QR Code Still Scan?
Yes, if you protect the square code in the middle. Phone cameras skip the outline and read the code inside. Problems start when the design makes that inner code hard to see.
Shaped codes have one real trade-off. A plain QR code should have a clear white border around it, called the quiet zone. In a shaped design, the decorative dots sit close to the real code, so that border is smaller. Modern phones handle this well, but it means you have less room for other mistakes. Good contrast and a good print size matter more here than on a plain code.
Dark on light
Keep the dots much darker than the background.
Size the inner code
Measure the square code inside the shape, not the whole shape.
Small logo
A logo covers part of the code. Keep it small and centered.
Two-phone test
Test on iPhone and Android before you print.
How Big to Print a Shaped QR Code
Size the square code inside the shape first. Then let the outline take the extra space around it.
| Where it goes | Scan distance | Inner square code (minimum) |
|---|---|---|
| Business card, label, tag | 10 to 30 cm | 2 × 2 cm |
| Table card, flyer, box | 30 to 50 cm | 3 × 3 cm |
| Poster, window sticker | About 1 m | 8 × 8 cm |
| Yard sign, large banner | 2 m or more | 20 × 20 cm |
What a QR Code Shape Generator Cannot Do
You should know these limits before you plan a print run.
Make the code itself round
The code stays square. Only the outline changes. A related format called rMQR (ISO/IEC 23941) is rectangular, but it is a different code type.
Use your own outline
You pick from the preset library. You cannot upload a custom outline, such as a state map or a logo silhouette. You can add your logo in the center.
Stay clear at tiny sizes
Small details in a shape blur when printed very small. Below about 3 cm wide, the outline may look like a blob.
Change the link on its own
A shape does not make a code editable. To change the link after printing, create a dynamic QR code.
Static or Dynamic: Which Shape QR Code Should You Make?
The shape works the same on both. The difference is what happens after you print.
Static shape QR code
Use a static QR code when the content will never change, such as Wi-Fi details or a fixed web page.
Static codes on IMQRScan are free forever with a free account, with no scan limits and no expiry. They do not include scan tracking.
Dynamic shape QR code
Use the dynamic QR code generator for menus, listings, and campaigns that may change.
You can edit the link after printing and see results with QR code tracking. This fits printed shapes well, since reprinting a custom design costs more.
Custom QR Code Shape Mistakes to Avoid
A shape with no link to the business
A car shape on a bakery flyer confuses people. Pick a shape that tells them what they will get.
Pale colors
Light pink dots on white may look pretty but can fail after printing.
Sizing the whole shape
A 3 cm pizza may hold a 1.5 cm code. Measure the inner code.
Too many effects at once
A busy shape, a gradient, star dots, and a big logo together can crowd the code.
Placing it on a photo
A busy photo behind the shape hides the outline and weakens the scan. Use a plain area.
Printing a screenshot
Screenshots blur when enlarged. Download the SVG for print.
